"The History of Sun Tzu's The Art of War - the Origins of the Science of Strategy"
by Gary Gagliardi

Sun Tzu grew up in a family of warriors. However, he did what no warrior had ever done before. He systematically analyzed the history of war in China to discover what worked and why. In doing so, he found that many of the commonplace assumptions about what worked in competition were simply wrong. For example, he saw that the size and wealth of an army had nothing to do with success, that force and power were not, as commonly assumed, just features of size. After unraveling the secrets to strategic success, he wrote the book that we call The Art of War.

The lessons in Sun Tzu’s The Art of War are not vague aphorisms, which is how they are usually translated. They are specific formulas describing a powerful way of succeeding in the uncertain world of competitive pressure. Sun Tzu’s science of bing-fa teaches strategy as a precise, systematic process. This system has survived for 2,500 years because it is detailed, it is complete, and it works! Those who studied it survived and prospered, and now it is known throughout the world as the source book of all strategic science.

Bing-fa means literally "martial arts," and is the foundation for many Asian competitive systems. It is not a vague philosophy, but a detailed system of specific methods. We list a few here.

On the basis of this work, Sun Tzu was hired as a general by the semi-barbaric kingdom of Wu. Using his discovery, Sun Tzu turned Wu into the leading power in China within a decade. After his death, his system was kept alive by his descendants and led directly to the unification of China and the creation of the most stable empire in history. Everyone who has mastered his system of strategy has gone on to be successful, which is why it is taught in all military academies and most leading business schools.

You may have heard that Sun Tzu’s The Art of War can help you become more successful. This is a dangerous half-truth. Even if you are lucky enough to find a good translation, the text alone will seem vague, meaningless, and difficult to apply. Without decoding the rules of strategy, you only get a vague idea of its power. Those who just want to brag about reading The Art of War can buy any version they like. If you need to succeed,  you must learn the secrets of strategy hidden inside The Art of War.
